Are you also curious about all those photographers on the side? We spoke to one of them: Ron van Hal from Sneek, Netherlands. He can mainly be found in Workum.
You regularly see them along the waterfront to shoot action photos. Kitesurf photography is a popular activity for many photographers and the kite surfer likes to be captured on image.
We interviewed 1 of them because we are curious about the person behind the lens. Because we can often be found at Kitespot Workum, we got Ron van Hal in our sights. We had 5 questions for him!
On a warm Summer evening we meet up with Ron van Hal at camping It Soal in Workum. We had already seen many kitesurfing pictures of this Frisian photographer on Instagram, but we had never spoken to each other. We are sitting in the evening sun at an appropriate distance and I immediately get straight to the point:
Who is Ron van Hal?
Ron, born in Amsterdam in 1964, now lives in Sneek and is a machine fitter (CAD CAM programmer and CNC miller). In his spare time he is a photographer and he goes out with his Canon 6D Mark II and 90D. His most used lenses are the
70-200 f2.8 and 35 -70 f2.8, but especially for close-up action photos, a shorter lens is more pleasant to work with.
Ron’s homespot is Workum, but he can also be found on Kitespot Mirns or Kornwerderzand.
He once came into contact with dog sports and then started photographing it. The action photos in particular appeal to him in such a way that he develops further in this and that is how he ended up in kite surfing. Playing with the elements, excitement and speed, that is what he wants to capture in his photos. Kitesurfing is of course very suitable for this.
Ron looks out over the IJsselmeer, the rippling water and the peace of the evening ensures that we too stare a bit lazily in front of us 🙂
Ron prefers to capture a certain atmosphere, the photo must be sharp so that you can read the emotion of the face. The environment also plays an important role in the image, where does it take place?
Ron prefers to capture the romance of kite surfing, a young guy with rasta hair in an old camper, who then jumps more than 10 meters high and does a board off trick.
He loves to follow 1 or 2 kiters and take a set of photos when he is on or in the water. Recently he also bought a wetsuit so that he can walk a bit into the water for even better photos.
Kite surfers generally like it when they are photographed. Ron agrees and says that he regularly experiences kiters sailing past almost nonchalantly, a hand free from the bar as if nothing is wrong.
Or a kite surfer who pulls his bar in front of the lens for the ultimate jump, but also lessers who are body dragging for the first time deliver very nice pictures.
You can of course buy the kitesurf photos of Ron van Hal, for a small contribution you will receive the original file by email. His website contains all photos that have been checked and found to be good for sale. Highly recommended, it has super cool photos.
You can also book Ron for a complete session, more information about this can also be found on the Ron van Hal website.
