Are you not afraid of Winter? Do you continue to kite? Read tips on how to stay warm and what signs of hypothermia are here.
Do you keep on kiting in the Winter months? Then we have 18 tips to stay warm. Kitesurfing in Winter has the advantage that the kite spot is nice and quiet and you have the space. You will not encounter swimmers either. The disadvantage is: hypothermia is lurking, possibly with a fatal outcome. If you follow a few important rules and make good preparations, you can safely go on the water!
Tip 1
Check at home where it is nice and warm your kite surfing gear for defects, so that you will not be surprised on the water.
Tip 2
Put your things well organized in your car. This way you prevent your balls from freezing and not finding your dry towel.
Tip 3
Always go with a budy and let those who stay behind know where you are.
Tip 4
Plan your kite session in terms of time. A winter session is always shorter to prevent hypothermia.
Tip 5
Take a thermos flask with hot tea or coffee. Great if you come off the water comes benumbed. It heats the inner body!
Tip 6
Bring another thermos with warm water. Nice to pour into your suit after kite surfing or in your shoes. Feels like a warm bath.
Tip 7
Your neoprene suit is at least 5.3 mm or thicker. Make sure your suit is dry before putting it on.
Tip 8
Under your neoprene suit you can wear a thermal shirt, if it is not warm enough you can pull a windstopper over your wetsuit. A dry suit is warmer, but sweat condenses on the inside.
Tip 9
A plastic bag over your hands makes it easy to put on your suit faster. Especially useful if you do that in the open air. This way you cool off less quickly.
Tip 9a
Even better, put on your wetsuit before going to the spot. Get in the car, heating off, windows open 😉, because when you change clothes in the cold and wind you are already 1-0 behind!
Tip 10
Hold on when you drive back. Heating on 10. Well cover your seat with plastic and duct tape, but there are also special seat protection covers for sale. Seawater will ruin your seat and / or your seat heating, so protection is recommended.
Tip 11
Wear surf shoes of 5 mm, possibly with neoprene socks in it. Once your feet are cold, you cannot get them warm anymore. This also applies to your hands.
Tip 12
Wear neoprene gloves (5 mm). There is also a mitt variant (the so-called Lobster glove). Make sure your gloves are not too tight, this will reduce blood circulation and cool them down quickly.
Tip 13
Wear a cap (hoodie) if it is not already attached to your winter suit.
Tip 14
Wear earplugs against surfers ears.
Tip 15
Coat your face with Vaseline so that water runs off your skin and you cool down less.
Tip 16
Do a good warming-up before you go on the water for a good blood circulation in your body.
Tip 17
On the water and tired? Do not take a risk go out off the water as quickly as possible!
Tip 18
As a novice kiter it is not wise to go kite surfing in the winter. You are still too much in the water. The chance of hypothermia is too great, with all the associated risks.
If your body temperature drops below 35 ° C, you speak of hypothermia. In ordinary people language: hypothermia. Your body temperature is normally between 35.5 and 37.5 degrees Celsius. On the cold water, your body requires a lot of energy to stay warm. If you are not properly packed, your body will only last for a limited time. Even in the best neoprene suit or drysuit, your body temperature drops if you lie in water of 5 degrees or lower (the average temperature of the North Sea in the winter). So stop on time.
If you come across someone who has hyperthermia , make sure that the person does not cool down further. Take off wet clothing, dry him or her thoroughly and wrap a blanket or similar around him or her. No alcohol and do not place in front of a hot stove. There are different kite bar lengths, but what’s the use? How does the mechanism work and where do you place your hands? Taigo Rocha from Kook Proof Activity Center answers these questions. Also handy for the novice kite surfer.
If you can just ride, you have been happy for a long time when you have your kite under control. Novice kiters often place their hands at the end of the kite surf bar, but the kite is easier to steer if you place your hands in the middle of the kite bar.
In this video you can see how that works and the leverage of the kite handlebar is also explained. The size of the kite determines the length of the bar.
Almost every brand has its own bar and tries to distinguish itself with it. Sometimes with innovations such as the click bars from Duotone and Harlem IPS Bar, but basically they all do the same whether they are called Sensor, DreamStick, Aviator, Overdrive or Linx.

12 tips for kite maintenance. Minimize the wear on your kitegear:
Do you want your kite to last longer and not wear out ? Then read the following 12 tips and do longer with your stuff. Save repair costs, replacement costs and avoid unpleasant surprises on the water. Influencing factors are:
Tip 1
Do not leave your kite in the sun for an unnecessarily long time. There is a UV protection coating on it, but it does not last forever. Better known as chalking: the coating falls apart due to UV rays.
So look for the shadow. Unfortunately, this is often not possible on beaches. What is possible, is that you apply a new UV coating to your kite over time (both sides). This is available in a spray tube. Perhaps they can also apply it for you in a kite repair shop. Afterwards, your kite will crackle like new, it will be water-repellent again, will become less dirty and will discolour less quickly.
You can also spray the lines with this coating. This prevents dirt and salt from getting into the lines and causing wear. Salt crystals are sharp and cause damage.
Tip 2
Do not leave your kite on the beach unnecessarily long, but look for the grass if there is one. With strong wind your kite is sandblasted. This makes your material wear out.
You could also deflate the kite and leave it rolled up on the beach. Not everyone always feels like it. Put something heavy on it so that it does not blow away.
Tip 3
Remove the sand from your piggtails and bridles before you attach them together. This prevents wear on both lines.
Tip 4
Rinse the sand off your lines and hands before rolling it up. If that is not possible, rinse the sand off the lines when they are rolled up.
Tip 5
Do not scoop loose sand on your kite to prevent it from blowing away, but use a sandbag.
Tip 6
Thoroughly clean the valve and nozzle of your pump. You don’t want (wet) sand in the bladder of the leading edge. This can cause small leaks if you roll up the kite and press the sand into the bladder wall.
Kites on the grass instead of the sand
Tip 7
Remove all the sand in the quick release and check if there is nothing in it.
Tip 8
If you kite at sea there is salt water on your lines. When these dry up, sharp salt crystals are formed. Therefore, always rinse your lines (but also your neoprene wetsuit) in fresh water.
Tip 9
Do not leave your kite in full wind for long. This prevents wear on the trailing edge. By flapping the trailing edge it wears extra quickly. This way you prevent your kite from looking like a frayed beach flag hanging outside day and night 😉
Tip 10
Don’t leave your kite in a car in full sun for days. Temperatures can reach up to 50+ degrees there, within half an hour at an outside temperature of 32 degrees. Not good for the valves of your kite. They can leak.
Tip 11
Do not leave your kitegear wet in the kitebag, but hang it to dry in your storage room or garage. This prevents weather or mold on your kite cloth.
Tip 12
Remove the sand between the zipper of your kitebag and use an extra inner pocket to prevent your kite cloth from getting caught between the zipper and taking damage.
These are our tips to help you enjoy your expensive kite gear for longer. Do you have a good tip that is not listed here, leave a comment at the bottom of the page!
