Indoor or outdoor activities
When you wake up in the morning, you hear it immediately, no wind. You do not hear a murmur from the trees, no howling wind around the house, it is dead silent. “What now?” you think startled. How do you get a daily dose of adrenaline when you can’t surf? Lying in bed is an option, but we all know, you’re not going to get an adrenaline shot from that. We have to think of something else.
Initially we have 2 choices, do we stay in or go out. We are outdoors people, so if the weather permits we go out into the fresh air.
Mountain biking
An ideal outdoor activity when there is no wind is mountain biking. In the Netherlands, you have excellent mountain bike tracks on the Veluwe and in the (North Holland) dunes, from beginners to advanced. You can also rent A-brands mountain bikes with helmet and water bottle here. Most rental companies also have GPS tracking devices with routes installed on them, so you can enjoy yourself without getting lost. When you are on vacation, there are usually also possibilities to rent a mountain bike.
Wave surfing or paddle boarding
Disc golfing
Disc golf is not really known in the Netherlands, but it is no less fun. You could describe disc golf as playing golf with a Frisbee. Instead of a hole where the ball is hit, Frisbee golf has a basket where the disc has to be thrown. The aim is to throw the disc into the basket with as few throws as possible. In the Netherlands you have an 18-hole nature course in Groet. You can enjoy yourself here in the beautiful nature reserve of the Schoorl dunes with height differences of up to 20 meters. You can also rent discs here. Other discgolf courses are in Amsterdam Sloterpark, Rotterdam Zuiderpark Zoetermeer, Arnhem Park Immerloo, Heerenveen and Groningen.
No wind, but sea water with a surf? Then check out the opportunity to raft or kayak through the surf. Struggling through the surf with your friends in a dinghy and surfing back is super fun to do. Or just catching the waves with a kayak and back again, also gives a huge adrenaline shot. Both are also good for body and mind, so keep this in mind if it is not windy.
In the Netherlands there are several schools where you can go out to sea with an instructor and a large raft, or you can rent a kayak, but also abroad you often have schools with rafting and kayaking possibilities.
Escape room
No wind and also rain then an indoor activity may be an option. Escape room has been hot lately. This is an interactive game in which a group of people is locked in a room. Using puzzles and riddles, they have to make their way out. An escape room can be found in every medium-sized municipality in the Netherlands, but also abroad. Googling at the local escape room and you have an afternoon of fun.
If you go on a kitesurfing holiday, check out the possibilities at your destination on the windless days. If you are by the sea, there are often plenty of activities to do, but it is always useful to check in advance what alternatives there are.
Don’t feel like it
Whatever you can have besides no wind is not liking it. Just stay at home or hang out in your apartment for a day during the holidays. Also delicious of course, nothing at all. Sleeping late, reading a book, watching TV, dozing off and waking up again. Drinking coffee, eating a sandwich, staring in front of you and before you know it the day is over .. Enjoy!
