We run a Online learn to sail website called NauticEd. There are free courses and some pay for courses on the site. Once you learn the basics of theory you can then get out on the water with a sailing school.
I'm trying not to make this an advertisement - due to this being a social page but we do have some free stuff on the site that makes it worth everyone's while. Our online interactive instructor is FREE for all. View at http://www.nauticed.org/sailing-instructor here you'll really learn how to trim the sails which is a good starting ground.
